Denatured Alcohol is used as a Solvent and as source of raw material for manufacture Ethyl Esters. It
is also used as fuel for spirit burners and camping stoves. Because of the diversity of industrial uses
for denatured alcohol hundreds of additives and denaturing methods have been used. The main
additive has traditionally been 10% Methanol, giving rise to term “Methylated Spirit”. Usually, it is
obtained by denaturing the Rectified Spirit/Impure Spirit with suitable permitted denaturant for specific industrial use. It is not permitted for human consumption. When a particular recommended
denaturing chemical is used to denature the Rectified Spirit/Impure Spirit from Grain for particular
industrial use to manufacture specialty chemicals then the denatured spirit is termed as Ordinary
Denatured Spirit (ODS).
